Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) communication campaign in Castilla-La Mancha

As a part of its commitments, Castilla-La Mancha’s Regional Government aims to revitalize and highlight how pivotal forest sector is in one of the largest and most depopulated regions in Europe.

To address this issue, #GestionForestalCLM campaign has been raised.

This campaign consists of a series of 6 videos on different topics in Castilla-La Mancha’s SFM regional sector, sharing multifunctionality of forests and bioeconomy in rural areas as the two main principles.  The campaign is not only shared for Castilla-La Mancha citizens, but also for EUSTAFOR Communicators Network and all Europe.

These videos subtitled in English can be watched on the Regional Ministry of Sustainable Development of Castilla-La Mancha Government Youtube’s channel.

The videos are the followings:

1. Montes de Utilidad Pública. Pioneros en Conservación

The “Montes de Utilidad Pública” are protected forests that were raised in the last 19th century, decades before other legal nature-conservation figures. Nowadays, these forests are managed by Castilla-La Mancha Regional Government with environmental, economical and societal criteria. Near 800.000 hectares of forests in Castilla-La Mancha have been granted with this figure.

2. Instrumentos de gestión forestal sostenible. Ordenando lo natural

The SFM instruments are documents where not only a diagnosis of all resources is established, but also it sets a complete planification in short and long term to rise the natural, economic and social value of that place. Knowing which natural resources Castilla-La Mancha contains, is the first step to value them.

3. Certificación forestal. La gestión del futuro

Forest Certification has been demonstrated to be one of the best tools to give value to our forests.  For this, an independent entity analyses the standards of SFM in a forest. Almost 100.000 hectares have implemented forest certification in Castilla-La Mancha.

4. Del bosque al mueble. Un ciclo sostenible

Wood has many uses for society. This resource is only produced in our forests, and cannot be replaced with any substitute. Furthermore, SFM forests guarantee this is a renewable product. The use of wood works as a carbon sink tool, which helps fighting climate change.

5. La resina. Aprovechamiento tradicional

Resin is one of the most valuable non-wood forest products. This resource has many uses and can be obtained in forests managed sustainably. Traditionally, Castilla-La Mancha has played a crucial role in the international resin market.

6. La restauración forestal tras catástrofes. El fénix mediterráneo

Forest restauration is the process where forests recover its original functions before a disturbance.  In the Mediterranean area, forests are under a multitude of risks, making them resilient and powerful. However, some of these disturbances could reach the limit of forests, needing human support and SFM for their restoration.
