EUSTAFOR welcomes its newest member Moldsilva

As the developments in EU forest policy continue to follow each other up at rapid pace, EUSTAFOR continues to expand its member base. In autumn 2022, a study was commissioned by EUSTAFOR to explore the possibilities of expanding EUSTAFOR with members in Eastern Europe. While the study was still to be concluded, Moldsilva, the Moldovan state forestry association, had already sent in its application to be an official member of EUSTAFOR. This request was validated during the ExCom meeting in Helsinki on 2 November 2023. Therefore, we are delighted to announce that as per 1 January 2024 Moldsilva is officially EUSTAFOR’s newest member. They will introduce themselves during the General Assembly, which is to take place on 6-7 March in Brussels.

Moldsilva joining EUSTAFOR fits the larger trend of Moldova and the EU strengthening their ties. So approved the European Council the conclusions on enlargement of the EU on 12 December 2023, and Moldova was one of the mentioned countries.

Agency Moldsilva is the central public administration body on state policy in forestry and hunting in the country. The lands they manage account for roughly 12,7% of country territory, covering 362.000 ha. 97,8% of Moldova’s forests are deciduous, with oak (Quercus spp.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) accounting for the vast majority of trees. The standing stock in Moldova’s forests is around 45 million m3.
