The second High Level Policy Debate was organized by the FOREST EUROPE Liaison Unit Bonn on 9 November 2023 in Berlin. The urgent need to strengthen resilience with sustainable forest management (SFM) strategies and increased cross-border and cross-sector collaboration was the main focus of the meeting.

The meeting was opened by the Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture of Germany, Mr Cem Özdemir and involved high-level policymakers, including ministers, directors general, and national representatives, as well as forest experts from observer countries and organizations. The meeting consisted of two panels, the first one with a focus on SFM and resilience in pan-European countries to tackle climate and biodiversity crisis, and the second one that addressed future-proofing SFM and resilience: experts’ perspectives on status quo and linkages. EUSTAFOR’s President Juha Niemelä delivered practical experiences on the question how key aspects of sustainable and multi-functional management of state forests can enhance the future forest resilience.

On the second day a field trip was organized to the forest of the City of Berlin, which provided a practical illustration of topics discussed by the high-level policy makers.
