Policy discussions and decision maker tool launch at ForestNavigator workshop
On 27 & 28 April, EUSTAFOR participated in the Forest Navigator 3rd stakeholder workshop in Vienna. Even though we are not an official partner, we have consistently participated in their events for several years now.
The ForestNavigator project assesses the climate mitigation potential of forests and forest-based sectors by modelling robust policy pathways, aligned with medium (2030) and long-term (2050) climate goals, and supporting EU and national decision makers. The ForestNavigator consortium consists of 24 partners from the EU, Switzerland, and China. The most notable partners are the European Commission and BOKU University. The consortium is led by IIASA, an international research organisation devoted to interdisciplinary, policy‐oriented research in the context of global climate change.
The workshop aimed to host a general discussion on forest research responding to EU policy needs, specifically on near real-time EU forests and bioeconomy monitoring to support GHG inventory development and robust pathways of the EU forest GHG balance, considering relevant EU environmental legislation and objectives such as the reviewed 2030 and 2050 climate targets.
The project also presented the ForestNavigator Portal, a decision making tool that is expected to be available in summer 2026, will visualise EU and national forest mitigation pathways, including baseline policy pathways and alternative pathways.
During the workshop, EUSTAFOR also had the chance to present its own vision on European forestry during the poster presentation.
