Conference on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services: A Common Agenda to 2020 and Beyond

The European Commission and the Committee of the Regions are organising a “Conference on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – A Common Agenda to 2020 and Beyond” on 23 and 24 May 2019 in Brussels.

Less than two years remain until 2020 – the deadline to deliver on the biodiversity targets set by the global Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the EU Biodiversity strategy to 2020. The EU and its Member States are taking stock of efforts and achievements in their 6thNational Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Debates are also gaining momentum on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, as part of the process launched at the 14th UN Biodiversity Conference of the Parties to the CBD in November 2018.

The Conference will start with a high-level political session in the afternoon of 23 May in the Solvay Library in Brussels. Commissioner Karmenu Vella will be joined by other prominent speakers to take stock of progress towards the EU nature and biodiversity objectives and launch the public consultation for the final evaluation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy. This will also be an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned, as well as on future challenges.

The second day, 24 May, we plan a series of technical discussions with stakeholders on the evaluation of the EU biodiversity strategy to 2020, and on potential EU contributions to the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
