EUSTAFOR at the LIFE TOKEN CO₂ Final Conference
On 25 June, EUSTAFOR participated as a panelist at the final conference of the LIFE TOKEN CO₂ project, held at the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels.
LIFE TOKEN CO₂ is an EU LIFE-funded project led by a Spanish consortium – including Digiltea/Hozono Global, the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia, Orthem, SGS and UCAM – focused on developing an advanced CO₂ life cycle model and a digital platform for forest carbon accounting and transparent certification. The project explored how blockchain-based tokenisation can make forest carbon credits more reliable, traceable and non-speculative.
Amila Meškin participated in the second roundtable, “From Project to Impact: Transfer, European Policies and Future Opportunities for Sustainable Forest Management”, alongside Ivan Martinez, Policy Officer at DG CLIMA, and moderated by Dr. José Luis Durán Sánchez from Orthem.
From the EUSTAFOR perspective, the key message was straightforward: in many European countries, forestry is and can be economically viable, and carbon finance should build on that rather than substitute for it. Where it adds most value is in contexts where sustainable forest management is currently lacking – including regions where the absence of active management is itself a driver of natural disturbances such as wildfires. Carbon credits and innovative financing mechanisms are most useful when they trigger and reward good management.
